The Republican National Committee last week passed a voice vote condemning Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois for investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol rampage,Calling the two lawmakers’ roles on the committee “part of a Democratic-led witch hunt against ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political dialogue.”Over the weekend, several Republicans voiced opposition to the decision.Senator Lisa Murkowski, who represents Alaska, said Sunday that the accusations were false.Murkowski was one of seven Republicans who voted to convict the former president for allegedly inciting a congressional riot.”I did not come here to be a Republican delegate,” she said.I’m here to represent the people of Alaska.I take this job very seriously.”When the Republican Party takes an approach that is absolutely wrong or says something that I believe is absolutely wrong, I think it is my responsibility as an Alaska senator to stand up for the people of Alaska.””As Americans, we must acknowledge the tragic events that took place, and we cannot allow false stories to be told,” she added.Cheney and Kinzinger were the only Republican members of the January 6 congressional panel, and they had previously faced strong opposition from within their own party for voting to impeach Trump.Mr Kinzinger is retiring at the end of his term, while Mr Cheney faces a primary challenge.Cheney currently leads her main rival by millions of votes.Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah also condemned the COMMITTEE’s decision, calling it disgraceful. He also joined all 50 Senate Democrats in voting to impeach Trump.”Shame on a party that condemns people with a conscience who seek truth in the face of vitriol.”Romney said on Twitter on Friday.”Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger get credit for pursuing the truth, even at great personal cost.”Following the censure vote, Maryland’s Republican governor Larry Hogan also tweeted: “This is a sad day for my party and my country.People are being punished simply for expressing their beliefs, for standing up for their principles, and for refusing to blatantly lie.”
